What are the increments on the scale for Canon's 1D MkIV Autofocus Microadjustments and other Canon cameras?

The scale in the menu system for Autofocus is plus and minus 1-20. No where is this scale related to distance.
Does anyone know what this scale equates too?

It is a proprietary Canon scale related to the DOF and aperture of the specific lens under test. So it is not directly related to distance as the scale is different for each lens. It might be that both Canon and Nikon use the same, but they do not discuss the meaning of the scale in precise terms, except that it is related to DOF. Aperture of the lens under test to the best of what I have read.

Some people have reported that the increment is the same as the focus increment in the Canon Remote software, but I have not yet tested this myself.
